What’s the Difference Between Hybrid and Electric Cars?

The popularity of eco-friendly cars continues to increase as the Earth heats up and weather seems to get more severe. Hybrids and electric cars are designed to cut the use of polluting fossil fuels like diesel and gasoline that contribute to global warming.

An electric vehicle (EV) is powered exclusively by electric current from an on-board battery. Charging the battery requires plugging the car into an external electrical source. Electric cars are pollution-free Zero Emission Vehicles, generating only water vapor and heat. High-voltage specialized chargers take just a few hours to fully recharge the battery pack. You can use a standard 120- or 240-volt outlet, but recharge time will be longer. More and more public charging stations are coming online throughout the nation, at parking meters, gas stations and parking garages. As the prices of electric “fill-ups” fall, you can anticipate electric vehicles to gain in popularity. Newer electric cars have a range of 100 miles or more per charge.

A hybrid vehicle has a battery and a gas tank. Hybrid cars use gasoline to recharge the battery and to drive a gasoline engine. The battery, connected to one or more electric motors, can propel a hybrid when in EV mode, but for only a relatively short distance. In contrast, a plug-in hybrid accepts gasoline in the fuel tank and external electrical charging of the battery. A plug-in hybrid can run on battery power exclusively or with the aid of a gasoline engine. Because it uses gasoline, a hybrid is a Low Emission Vehicle, cleaner than a conventional car but not as clean as an EV. A hybrid car has a range of several hundred miles before you must visit the pump.
