Under the hood
At the heart of the Niro’s hybrid propulsion system is a 1.6-liter inline-four gas engine. In the 2024 Kia Niro Hybrid, the gas powerplant is coupled with a 32-kW to produce a combined output of 139 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2024 Kia Niro PHEV pairs the same engine with a 62-kW electric motor and an 11.1-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The result is a combined output of 180 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque and a 33-mile driving range on electric only, an increase over the previous model’s 26-mile electric-only range.
All versions of the Niro Hybrid send their power to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Fuel economy is one of the primary missions of the Niro. The Kia 2024 Niro Hybrid offers a combined EPA rating of 53 mpg, while the Niro PHEV gets you an EPA-estimated 108 MPGe.
A complete package
The way the Kia Niro Hybrid looks, and its staggering fuel economy are enough reasons to pique the interest of most savvy new vehicle shoppers. A relatively small uplift in price takes you up a grade to the EX trim level. However, the infotainment system gets upgraded to a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, and you also get to enjoy SiriusXM Satellite Radio, voice recognition, wireless phone charging capability, and push-button start. Additional EX standard features also include remote start, ambient lighting, leather and cloth upholstery, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The standard safety features are impressive at every level, but that step up from LX to EX adds Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go, Highway Driving Assist, and rear parking sensors.
